Santa Paws is coming to town

It’s not too late to take care of your beloved pet and prepare for the highly anticipated “Santa Paws Photos” sponsored by the Amarillo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and hosted at Pet Supplies Plus at 5807 SW 45th. The hours will be from noon to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday December 9th and 10th.

No appointment required. Fees will be $10 for a 5×7 print or $10 to take your own photo with a cell phone or camera.

Funds raised from the event will go toward maintenance and supplies for the ASPCA Kennel at 110901 S. Coulter. Maintenance costs have skyrocketed for everyone, including pet care, cleaning products, utilities and insurance, so any contributions would be appreciated. The shelter is a No-Kill shelter and houses approximately 70 dogs and 35 cats at a time. All animals are spayed or neutered and given vaccinations and the necessary medical care to keep them healthy and adoptable. The Amarillo SPCA is not affiliated with the national ASPCA and all money stays in our community. The Amarillo SPCA has had a shelter for the longest period of any non-profit pet group.

Over the years, Santa Paws helpers have photographed hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs and cats throughout the Panhandle. But canines and felines aren’t the only subjects. Board member and ASPCA volunteer Mary Ramirez said they had posed with pigs, goats, snakes, ferrets, birds and even a horse, but the crew was happy to come outside to take the picture for the participants. “We’re happy to accommodate the owners as much as possible,” Ramirez said.

The group has seen up to 30 participants at an event and had Santa Paws at multiple locations across the city. “It can get a little rough, but it’s always fun,” said ASPCA President Lynn May. “We certainly hope to have a good year so that our shelter animals also have a good year and get adopted.”

Pet Supplies Plus generously donated a decked area in the back of the store near the bathing station for the photo booth.
