Pet food brand acquired by PE-backed group

A cat and dog food company has been acquired by a pet care group, which was recently acquired by a US private equity firm.

Burns Pet Nutrition, based in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, has been acquired by Melton Mowbray-based Assisi Pet Care Group for an undisclosed sum.

Assisi Pet Care sells its products in the UK and across Europe, with two natural treat manufacturing facilities located in Poland.

In October, Yorkshire-based businessman Peter Mangion, founder and chief executive of Assisi Pet Care Group, in collaboration with Wind Point Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm with approximately $6 billion in assets under management. The deal provided an exit for Harwood Private Equity.

John Burns MBE founded Burns Pet Nutrition 30 years ago. Burns, a licensed veterinarian, developed formulations focused on pet health to solve common problems he saw in his veterinary practice.

Today, the Burns pet food brand is known for its dry and wet dog foods, as well as its recently introduced range of products for cats.
