PE-backed pet care team makes first acquisition

Assisi Pet Care Group has made its first acquisition since being acquired by a US private equity group earlier this year. Assisi partnered with Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners in October 2023 and has now acquired Burns Pet Nutrition, a Carmarthenshire-based company that produces cat and dog food.

Burns Pet Nutrition was founded by certified veterinarian John Burns MBE 30 years ago, with Burns developing pet health-focused food formulations to solve common problems he encountered with pets through his veterinary practice.

Since then, the brand has become a well-known manufacturer of dry and wet dog food products and recently introduced a line for cats. The business was sold after John Burns decided to retire and was bought by Assisi for an undisclosed sum.

Assisi Pet Care is based in Melton Mowbray and sells its products throughout the UK and Europe, operating two natural treats manufacturing facilities based in Poland. Since it was backed by Wind Point Partners, in a deal that provided an exit for Harwood Private Equity, the business began targeting growth opportunities in the European pet care market.

Assisi founder and chief executive Peter Mangion said the deal added a “highly regarded” company to the group’s portfolio, commenting that Burns was “a perfect fit for Assisi as animal health and welfare is central to brand proposition”. Mangion added that the integration of the Burns team in Assisi will add expertise in product development, finance, marketing, sales and operations.

Regarding Assisi’s growth plans, Mangion said: “We look forward to working with our new colleagues as we integrate the Burns brand into the Assisi portfolio and strengthen our offering to our customers across Europe. The acquisition of Burns Pet Nutrition is the first transaction following the recent investment in Assisi by Wind Point Partners and signals our commitment to implement our growth strategy in the European pet care market.”
